Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about car hire in Protaras — deposits, insurance, driving, pickup and licences.
Compare Car Hire DealsCan I drive my hire car all the way to the Sea Caves?
No. The tracks to the Sea Caves and Cyclops Cave are unsurfaced limestone and driving them voids your CDW. Park at the nearest tarmac point — usually the roadside Blue Lagoon lot or the visitor centre — and walk the 10–15 minutes on foot. The main asphalt spine road and the visitor centre extension are fine for any standard hire car.
Is there a charge to enter Cape Greco National Forest Park?
No. The park is free to enter and open 24 hours a day with no staffed gate. There is no entry fee, no kiosk, and parking along the main road costs nothing. Bring your own water and food — there are no shops or cafés inside the park boundaries.
How do I reach the famous turquoise Blue Lagoon?
The famous sheltered turquoise Blue Lagoon has no road access at all — it is reachable only by boat. Shared boat trips depart from Ayia Napa harbour and Protaras pier, typically costing €20–30 per person for a standard cruise and €50–60 for a premium option. Do not confuse it with the roadside Blue Lagoon, which you can drive to on tarmac and swim at for free.
What time should I arrive at Fig Tree Bay to get a parking space?
In July and August, the main municipal car park (roughly 300 spaces) fills by 10:00. Arriving before 09:30 gives you the best chance of a space and means parking is free or near-free (the small daily charge of around €1.50 starts at 09:00). If you miss the early window, be prepared for a 10-minute walk from overflow parking on the approach roads.
Is it worth hiring a car just for a day trip to Cape Greco from Protaras?
Yes, particularly if you want to visit more than one spot in a day. A hire car lets you combine Fig Tree Bay in the morning, the Cape Greco asphalt loop at midday and Konnos Bay in the afternoon — a journey of around 25 km in total on straightforward roads. Taxis for the same circuit would cost considerably more and tie you to a fixed schedule.
Can I walk on the Love Bridge rock arch at Kamara tou Koraka?
No. The arch — sometimes called the Love Bridge — has been fenced off due to the risk of collapse and walking on it is forbidden. You can view it from the dirt parking area nearby, which is accessible by hire car. The arch is a striking natural feature and worth the short stop, but no access onto the structure is permitted.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Cyprus?
No. A full UK photocard driving licence is accepted by all hire firms in Cyprus. An International Driving Permit is not required for British licence holders. If you hold a paper-counterpart licence (issued before 1998), contact the hire firm in advance as some require an additional document.
What is the drink-drive limit in Cyprus compared to England?
The Cypriot limit is 0.05% blood alcohol, which is stricter than England, Wales and Northern Ireland (0.08%). It is equivalent to the Scottish limit. In practical terms, treat Cyprus as a zero-tolerance destination: even one drink with a meal can push an average adult close to or over the limit.
Will a speeding fine from a Cypriot camera follow me back to the UK?
Yes. If a hire car triggers a speed camera, the hire firm must pass your details to the Cypriot authorities. The fine notice will be sent to your UK address. The hire firm also charges its own admin handling fee on top. Pay within the stated deadline; there is no blanket amnesty for tourists, and unpaid fines can be pursued on a subsequent visit.
Which fuel do hire cars in Protaras use — petrol or diesel?
Most smaller hire cars run on unleaded 95 petrol; larger vehicles and some SUVs use diesel. Always confirm the fuel type on your hire agreement or by checking the label inside the fuel cap before filling up. Misfuelling in a hire car results in a significant recovery charge.
Are there toll roads between Larnaca Airport and Protaras?
No. Cyprus has no toll roads. The A3 motorway from Larnaca to Protaras — the standard airport transfer route — is free of charge. Budget only for petrol when planning your driving costs for the trip.
What warning equipment is legally required in a hire car in Cyprus?
Cyprus law requires two red warning triangles in every private car. A hi-vis vest, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher are only legally required for commercial vehicles — not private hire cars. However, carrying a hi-vis vest is sensible practice, and most well-maintained hire cars will include one. Check that both triangles are in the boot when you collect the vehicle.
Which airport should I fly into for Protaras?
Larnaca International (LCA) is the only practical choice. It is 70–80 km from Protaras — around 50–60 minutes on the A3 motorway. Paphos Airport (PFO) is roughly 185 km away and adds about 2.5 hours of driving. Always filter hire search results to Larnaca, not Paphos.
How large is the deposit (excess) on a Cyprus hire car?
Standard CDW excess is typically €800–€1,500, frozen on your credit card as a pre-authorisation at collection. It is released at drop-off if there is no damage. Some local Protaras firms charge a lower deposit or zero deposit with a full-cover supplement. Debit cards are often refused for the deposit hold — bring a credit card.
Can I drive my hire car to Northern Cyprus?
Almost universally, no. Republic of Cyprus hire firms prohibit crossing the Green Line into Northern Cyprus and CDW is void the moment you do. The contract will say so in the small print. Day trips to the north must be done on foot through a crossing point or on a licensed cross-line tour bus.
Are the roads around Cape Greco suitable for a standard hire car?
The paved coast road to Cape Greco National Park is fine for any hire car. The tracks leading down to the sea-caves and Cyclops-Cave viewpoint are unpaved and CDW is void on unsurfaced roads under standard contracts. Park on the last section of tarmac and walk the short distance in — the caves are a few minutes on foot from the road.
What fuel policy should I look for?
Full-to-full is the fairest and most transparent policy: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Avoid contracts that pre-charge for a full tank at collection (the airport-desk upsell) — you will pay well over the forecourt rate and lose the unused petrol. If full-to-full is not available, choose a low-fuel policy over the pre-purchase upsell.
How long is the drive from Larnaca Airport to Protaras?
Roughly 70–80 km along the A3 motorway and B3 coast road, taking 50–60 minutes in normal traffic. Add 10–15 minutes during summer evenings when the Ayia Napa–Protaras coastal strip gets congested.
Is Paphos airport a realistic option for Protaras?
Not for most visitors. Paphos is ~180 km and around 2.5 hours from Protaras. Unless a specific fare saving is very significant, Larnaca is the only sensible choice.
What happens if my flight lands after the hire desk closes?
Most desks close around 21:00. Out-of-hours collection triggers an additional surcharge — Avis charges €60 for late pickups. Always notify the hire firm of your flight number when booking and get written confirmation of any after-hours arrangement before you travel.
Can I collect at the airport and drop off somewhere else in Cyprus?
A one-way drop to Paphos with an international chain typically costs €40–50 extra, and most local Famagusta firms will not accept a Paphos return at all. If you need a different drop-off point, clarify this at the time of booking — do not assume it is included.
Is there a petrol station near Protaras open overnight?
Yes — an EKO station on Protaras Avenue (no. 268) has 24-hour automated pumps. Be aware that card payments at automated pumps place a €60–75 pre-authorisation hold that UK banks may take 3–7 days to clear. Try to fill up at a staffed till in daylight if possible.
What is resort delivery and how does it work?
Several local firms — including Windmills, Sixt Protaras and Champion — will deliver a hire car directly to your hotel in Protaras, Pernera or Kapparis. You take a private transfer from the airport on arrival day (around €50–60), rest, and the car appears at your hotel the next morning. This lets you inspect the vehicle in daylight and means your hire period starts a day later.
Can I take my hire car from Protaras into Northern Cyprus?
Almost certainly not without special permission. The vast majority of hire firms based in the Republic of Cyprus prohibit taking the vehicle north of the Green Line, and your hire car insurance is completely void once you cross. If crossing by car matters to you, ask the hire company in writing before signing the contract. For most visitors, the practical solution is to park on the southern side at Deryneia, cross on foot, and use a northern taxi (roughly €10–15 to Famagusta).
Is it worth driving to Ayia Napa or should I get the bus?
For the town strip and evening out, the 101/102 bus (around €2) or a taxi is the better choice — parking in Ayia Napa centre is paid and the streets are congested in summer. Drive if you are heading to WaterWorld waterpark or want to reach Nissi Beach before the car park fills around 10:00.
Do I need to buy insurance at the Green Line crossing?
If you have written permission to take the hire car across, you must purchase a separate northern third-party policy at the kiosk in the buffer zone — cash only, roughly €20–25, staffed during daytime hours only. This policy covers third-party liability but does not cover any damage to the hire car itself. You remain personally liable for the car. Cross during daylight hours so the kiosk is staffed.
Can I drive inside the Varosha ghost town?
No. Hire cars are not permitted inside the Varosha zone. Leave the car in the external car park and proceed on foot, or hire a bicycle at the entrance for around €3. You can only walk along marked routes and cannot enter any buildings. Allow roughly three hours. Alternatively, the free rooftop at the Cultural Centre of Occupied Famagusta in Deryneia gives a view over Varosha without crossing the border at all.
Are the flamingos at Larnaca Salt Lake worth a detour in summer?
The flamingos are a winter attraction, present roughly from November to March. In summer the lake is a dry, white salt plain — still an interesting landscape and the adjacent Hala Sultan Tekke mosque is worth seeing year-round, but do not build a summer day trip around birdwatching.
Where should I park for a day trip to Nicosia?
Park in the Venetian moat car parks on the south side of the walled city — D'Avila and Tripoli bastion lots charge around €2–5. Do not attempt to drive into the narrow lanes of the old town. To visit North Nicosia, cross on foot via the pedestrian-only Ledra Street checkpoint with your passport or ID; the crossing takes 5–10 minutes and leaves your hire car safely parked in the Republic of Cyprus, avoiding any border insurance complications.
